Green means ecological. Green means environmentally-friendly. Green means recyclable. Green means organic. Green means natural. Green means reusable. Green means energy saving. Going green is doing any action that can protect and preserve our natural resources and avoiding any action that can harm our environment. Going green means changing little things in our homes, offices and neighborhoods to help clean up our environment and ensure a safe planet for our children. It can be as big as creating state laws for the environment. It can be as simple as using both sides of a paper when printing or unplugging electrical devices when not in use.
In the Philippines where I am now living and working, it seems that the Green fever has not yet arrived. Along the busy thoroughfares of Manila, you’ll see very old buses belching out really large black fumes. The rivers are polluted with toxic wastes churned out by the surrounding factories and crowded residential areas. In many street corners, you’ll see piles of garbage swarmed by flies and producing stench. The supermarkets both big and small still use plastic bags for packing sold items.
As a balikbayan, I am troubled by what I see as the worsening environmental condition of the Philippines. The aim of this blog is to help in “greening” the Philippines by promoting green consciousness among Filipinos. It serves as a meeting point of ideas, tips, news and discussions on how this issue. The environmental problem in the country is big; we cannot solve them instantly. But we can make the situation a little bit better by going green in simple ways.
